Frequently asked questions

When can I enrol my child?

Applications for kindergarten can be submitted following the birth of your child via the City of Boroondara’s website.

What funding does the kindergarten receive?

Robert Cochrane Kindergarten receives funding from the Department of Education to support children to access a high-quality kindergarten program in the two years before school (3 year-old and 4 year-old). A child can only be funded for a kindergarten place at one service at any one time.

As a member of the Boroondara Kindergarten Central Registration Scheme (BKCRS), Robert Cochrane Kindergarten requires the kindergarten funding to be allocated to our service. If a child is also attending another service that offers a funded kindergarten program (e.g. long day care centre), families must advise the additional service that the funding is to be allocated to Robert Cochrane Kindergarten.

Is my child ready to start kinder?

It is advisable to consider your child’s suitability for 3-year-old kindergarten before commencing the kindergarten year, as there is no option to repeat funded 3-year-old kinder. Children accessing 3-year-old kindergarten will transition to 4-year-old kindergarten the following year. This is particularly important for children born between 1 January and 30 April. The City of Boroondara website has some helpful information on this here.

Is my child eligible for a second year of 4-year-old kinder?

A second year of funded 4-year-old kindergarten may be considered when a child shows delays in learning and development outcome areas in the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework, and when:
- the kindergarten program is deemed to be the most appropriate learning program; and
- the child will achieve better outcomes at kindergarten than if they go to school.
